History of the Depatment
The Department of Graphic Design Technology at Takoradi Technical University (TTU) has its roots in the development of tertiary technical education in Ghana. In 1992, the Polytechnic Law (PNDC Law 321) upgraded polytechnics to tertiary institutions, leading to the introduction of the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Commercial Art at Takoradi Polytechnic. Over time, the Commercial Art programme evolved, giving rise to specialized options and academic departments.
A significant milestone was achieved in 2007 with the enactment of the Polytechnic Act 2007 (Act 745), which strengthened the mandate of polytechnics to offer tertiary education in technology, applied arts, commerce, science, and related fields. This legislation also encouraged the development of new academic programmes and enhanced institutional autonomy.
In 2008, the Department of Graphic Design Technology was officially established after being carved out of the former Fine Art Department. The department was created to offer the HND in Commercial Art (Graphic Design Option) and has since grown into one of the six departments within the Faculty of Applied Arts and Technology (FAAT). It is currently one of the faculty’s largest departments in terms of student enrolment.
The department was founded on the philosophy of providing competency-based, practical, and industry-oriented education in graphic design. Its programmes emphasize creativity, innovation, technical skills, and entrepreneurship, preparing graduates to become professionals who are capable of meeting the demands of the creative industry while also creating employment opportunities for others.
Since its establishment, the department has expanded its academic offerings beyond the HND programme to include Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and Master of Technology (M.Tech) programmes in Graphic Design and Printing. It has also recorded significant achievements in curriculum development, staff advancement, research, innovation, and community engagement. Faculty members continue to contribute to academic research, while students showcase innovative works in exhibitions, design competitions, and university innovation fairs.
Today, the Department of Graphic Design Technology remains committed to producing highly skilled, ethical, and innovative designers who contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s creative economy and the global design industry through quality education, research, and practical training.
